Andrea Tyrrel

CRN, CMT, CD(DONA)

I am a DONA certified birth doula with experience around both hospital and home births. I feel honored to be supporting families as they grow and love learning about their unique needs and desires to help make their birth experience the best possible for them.

I am also a Certified Massage Therapist with a focus in prenatal and relaxation massage. I feel blessed to have found my passion working with and around bodies as they go through life's transitions. With a deep respect for the human body, I feel so lucky to give back to others through this work. With a continued passion to gain knowledge around the birth of a child, I then began my journey as a Postpartum Doula and years later as a Childbirth Educator. In the fall of 2020, I began a new path around childbirth as I begin a Nursing program and SF State, obtaining both a bachelors and masters in Nursing, becoming a Women's Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. Beyond this, I plan to continue my education and eventually become a Certified Nurse Midwife to enhance my knowledge around the phenomenon of birth and be able to offer services to clients who may be looking for alternative options around hospital births and beyond.

I love empowering expectant families about their body's capabilities, guiding them and showing them that they can do it thus helping them to accomplish their desires for labor.

A baby will be born if  a doula is there or not. Nurses and doctors/midwives will be able to do their job whether a doula is there or not but chances are extremely high that a family's experience wont be nearly the same  as it could be by utilizing a doula.

I love what I do and my goal is to show people that labor, although intense, does not have to be what they have heard their whole life, it can be just as beautiful as holding your baby in your arms, and mother by mother I will accomplish my goal of spreading this 'great news' out to anyone willing to listen and experience it no matter the birth route chosen.

I am born and raised Bay Area and have been working as a birth doula since 2010. I’ve been called a 'baby whisperer' for as long as I can remember, perhaps inheriting the proclivity to care for babies and new parents from my Mom and Lola who supported homebirth in rural Philippines. It was the empowering experience of my now 14 year old son's birth, in a hospital, with a doula, that served as my catalyst into birth work. I currently provide doula services to clients across the East Bay.

In addition to birth work, I enjoy taking on the admin side of the birth world and previously served as the clinical coordinator to Golden Oak Midwives serving as the primary point of contact for welcoming new patients into the practice, scheduling appointments, managing insurance and billing, disability claims, and other paperwork, and generally supporting the smooth operation of the practice. I enjoy having the administrative role with the Sister Doulas and am especially passionate about doula services being covered by insurance and employer maternity benefits .

Over the a decade and hundreds of births attended, what keeps me coming back is the nature of birth. Even with all the science and Western medicine around us, birth is a normal mammalian function. The biggest challenge is often working through the fears and insecurities in our modern industrious minds and bodies. I help birthing people tap into their uninhibited strength to birth powerfully. That look of pride and accomplishment on a new mother’s face reminds me again and again that this is the work I was born to do.

When I’m not massaging a client through their contractions, I’m hanging with my two sons, indoor gardening, or walking Lake Merritt.
